Promotion of the Italian Language

Few have taken its destiny at heart by promoting it.

Our language is our culture. In our communities we all desire that our children learn the language of Ascoli and Manzoni, Pindemonte and Monti, Leopardi, Ungaretti, Montale and Saba. Our proud list could continue for pages.

We must safeguard our linguistic tradition. We must do this at home, and create programs to facilitate this abroad, particularly for our children. Each family must know that our country is behind us. I will promote the reorganization and expansion of Italian schools to use the best examples from across the world as a starting point to build a lasting tribute to our heritage.

Often, however, we have waited in vain for support and financing and government policies instead of becoming strong in our desires and taking the initiative ourselves. Together with Alessandro Volta, I would like to say that I have a very strong desire to fight for an ideal - an adequate curriculum in the Italian language beginning in the elementary school and continuing up to College.

The time has come, carpe diem cum est modus in rebus, to make our demands as parents, educators, and compatriots for educational services to protect our culture and traditions. Our demands must be addressed by our representatives in Parliament.

In doing so, we will promote our identity around the world, and we will strengthen the appreciation of the Italian contribution and culture to the global civilization.
